First event: Lonely Planet – Social Media Club Melbourne #smcmelb

It’s been a few months in the making, setting up the Social Media Club of Melbourne that is. However, we’ve done it thanks to some great work from some smashing people, @lucio_ribeiro, @nikski, @trevoryoung and @timbeveridge (plus a special mention to @katekendall). And we’re happy to announce our first event for 2010!

First Event – LONELY PLANET: a digital journey

Our first event has three speakers from Lonely Planet who will talk about their very open business model and how social media has taken it to the next level.

Hear Gus, Venessa and Johnny chat candidly about Lonely Planet’s social web experiences, from crowd-sourcing of ideas through to user-generated content and fan engagement via social media channels and online promotions.

Event time & date: Wednesday, February 17, 2010 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Location: Denmark House, Level 3, 428 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne

Space is limited, so get your RSVP in quick smart RSVP here – at Eventbrite

EVENT REVIEW: The Digital Tipping Point

The full event review is available in the 09 April edition of Marketing Magazine, available today, 25th March.

Anytime you rock up to a free event expect that a sales pitch is coming your way, and too right, if they’re buying the drinks. This event, presented by Adknowledge was 25% sales pitch, 70% new ideas & 5% free drinks.

The day was dedicated to my favourite misunderstood term, social media, and I went away with some new ideas and insights. However, I was a little disappointed that the case studies focused on youth brands, which logically fit in social media, what about products for adults, retirees and less exciting categories? We, as social media people, need to be careful not to pigeon hole social media as a tool to connect with kids.

The first speaker, Brett Brewer, spent 90% of his time on Adknowledge and 10% on new ideas, and we thank Adknowledge for the free day.

Alistair Henderson, from OMD Fuse, has many great case studies, however, we were once again hit with the award winning V-Raw campaign. Which is a great…

…which means? There are 28 other ways you can pay to connect with your audience.

So, listen, engage, create value and get your PR agency to start taking social media seriously.
