Our fascination with lists…

Julian Cole puts out a regular list of the top marketing blogs in Australia, this list gets published in commercial publications and people look at it with varying levels of respect.

So maybe I’m bitter that my blog isn’t on the list, or maybe I was just suprised to read the following:

A big up to Zac Martin for collating the list and Peter Wagstaff for putting it in a table.

And Julian’s opinion comes into play on the list

1. How thought provoking is the content
2. How often is the site is updated
3. How much insight does the author provide into the field of Marketing

So:

1. Why are they doing it manually? Weird huh, with all this fancy technology around you’d think they’d be able to make it happen automatically?

2. As my girlfriend said today, “Doesn’t that completely miss the point of ‘social media‘ if it includes Julian’s opinion?”. Now she’s no social media consultant, but she’s got a point.

So I spent a few hours today and, I think last weekend, and built a blog ranking site.

  1. It lets you sort the list based on what you think is important
  2. Has a total score, which is calculated based on a formula
  3. Doesn’t have any opinion
  4. You can filter the list by tags, instead of it being 1 list, its as many lists as there are tags
  5. It’s automatically updated every day

Love to know what you think, and how it can be improved? I’ve got some ideas, like historical graphs some kind of relationship with the blogger‘s twitter account, some kind of badge… what dya think?

So check out www.justanotherblogranker.com and add your blog

One Response to “Our fascination with lists…”

  • Here’s how I see it. Without Julian’s opinion, the list is just another list. Anyone could put together one. Instead, this gives it a point of difference and makes it a little more interesting. He by no means sells it as a definitive ranking, but rather a list for people to explore other blogs.

As to why it’s not automated, I imagine it’s fairly expensive if you’re not much of a coder. ;]
